Ear Surgery
Ear surgery, commonly known as otoplasty or ear pinning surgery, is a procedure typically performed in early childhood, usually after the age of 5-6, and can significantly impact a child’s psychosocial development, school performance, academic success, and relationships with peers.
Ear aesthetics involve surgical procedures aimed at correcting insufficient folding of the ear. Our ears, protruding forward, may sometimes appear large to us, although their size is normal. Ear development is largely completed by the age of 6, and ear appearance is a serious cosmetic concern that can affect an individual’s psychology and social interactions.
Numerous sociological studies have shown that children who are teased by their peers due to their ears during childhood and school years tend to have decreased academic performance and are more likely to withdraw from school. Prominent ears can restrict hair styling freedom in women and often lead to a tendency to wear long hair in men.
How is Ear Aesthetic Surgery Performed?
Various problems can contribute to ear protrusion. In cases where the problem is straightforward, the ear can be reshaped without incisions in about 20 minutes.
In more severe cases, shaping the ear may require an incision, and in such cases, the surgery may last 40-50 minutes. At Associate Professor Dr. Gürkan KAYABAŞOĞLU’s clinic, incisions are typically made behind the ear, allowing the scar to heal discreetly behind the ear.
Thread Ear Aesthetics
Throughout history, more than 200 surgical techniques have been described for otoplasty, and thread techniques are one of them. At Associate Professor Dr. Gürkan KAYABAŞOĞLU’s clinic, thread ear aesthetics are performed without cutting or bleeding. Surgical threads are inserted into the ear through small holes opened behind the ear to shape it.
This procedure, lasting approximately 15 minutes, does not cause swelling or bruising on the ear. The recovery time for these surgeries is shorter compared to conventional methods. After ear surgery, the ear is wrapped in a soft bed of cotton for the first 3 days. Subsequently, the ear is completely exposed, and for one week, it is recommended to wear an elastic bandage only while sleeping to prevent the ear from hitting the pillow.
Postoperative Care
Ear surgery without incisions using only threads takes about 20 minutes. When performed with an open technique involving an incision behind the ear, it may take 45 minutes to 1 hour. The postoperative care is quite simple. After keeping the ear covered for a period of three days with just a tennis headband or bandana, the ear is completely exposed. In the following period, there is a one-week period during which the ear is kept covered only at night to prevent it from touching the pillow. The stitches behind the ear are self-absorbable and do not require additional dressing.
