How is Rhinoplasty Performed?

It is performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately 2 hours to complete. Rhinoplasty can be performed using two different techniques: open and closed. The open rhinoplasty technique is generally preferred at our clinic under the supervision of Associate Professor Dr. Gürkan KAYABAŞOĞLU.

Open and Closed Rhinoplasty

The main difference between the two techniques is the incision made in the lower part of the nose. When this area is cut and the surgery is performed, it is called open rhinoplasty. However, it is not entirely accurate to think that there is no incision in the closed technique. In both techniques, the aim is to make the anatomical structures inside the nose visible and to shape the nose according to the pre-planned design.

Things to Consider After Rhinoplasty

1. The cast on the nose will remain for 7-10 days and should not get wet. Avoid being in extremely hot places as sweating may loosen the cast.
2. Brush your teeth very carefully for the first 10 days, especially when brushing your front teeth. It is important that your toothbrush is soft.
3. Avoid excessive physical activity after surgery.
4. Do not take a bath or be in a steamy environment until the bandages on your nose are removed.
5. Avoid excessive facial movements and laughing for a week.
6. Avoid wearing turtleneck or tight-necked clothes for 20 days following the surgery.
7. Do not touch your face and nose firmly for 3 weeks.
8. Avoid excessive sunlight for 6 weeks after the operation, as excessive heat can cause swelling in the nose.
9. Swelling may occur under the eyes and on the face after nasal surgery, although much less frequently compared to older surgical techniques. These swellings will subside within 1-2 weeks.
10. Do not take any medication other than those prescribed by your doctor.
11. Do not wear contact lenses for 5 days after the surgery.

Piezo Rhinoplasty

Piezo rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure used to shape the nasal bones during nasal surgeries, employing a device that could be considered a gift of technology to nasal surgeries. During piezo surgery, ultrasonic sound waves are used to shape the bones.
An interesting feature of this latest technology is that it does not cut soft tissues such as skin, muscles, and blood vessels unless the device touches bone tissue. Its tissue-selective feature prevents damage to other tissues around the bones. As a result, there is less bleeding during surgery, leading to reduced bruising and swelling post-operation, ultimately enhancing the comfort of patients after surgery.

Functional health problems or aesthetic concerns often lead patients who wish to undergo nasal surgery to continuously postpone the surgery out of fear of bone fractures during surgery, bruising post-operation, and possible pain. With the introduction of ‘Piezo Rhinoplasty,’ the fears of patients are now alleviated.

Does Bruising Occur in Piezo Rhinoplasty?

Since piezo rhinoplasty is selective only to bone tissue, cutting and shaping occur only in bone tissue during the procedure, without causing damage to soft tissues and blood vessels. As there is no damage to soft tissue and blood vessels, bruising and swelling post-operation are minimal. Additionally, individuals can return to their daily lives early due to the lack of soft tissue and vessel damage.

What to Expect After Piezo Rhinoplasty?

One of the most common questions patients have after piezo rhinoplasty is whether the nasal packs placed inside the nasal cavity will cause any breathing difficulties. In our clinic under the supervision of Associate Professor Dr. Gürkan KAYABAŞOĞLU, specifically designed silicone leaf-shaped nasal packs are used. With a grooved system, they provide comfort during breathing. After the surgery, patients may need to stay in the hospital for one day. The packs are removed after one week, allowing patients to quickly return to their social and work life.
